But he also needed and deserved the favour on his own account. His companionship was really necessary for Frodo's sake – it is difficult to imagine a hobbit, even one who had been through Frodo's experiences, being really happy even in an earthly paradise without a companion of his own kind, and Bilbo was the person that Frodo most loved. But the exception made for Frodo, seems to have been the catalyst for Bilbo going West, even if there were other reasons for it too:īilbo went too. And maybe most significantly, permitting Sam to sail was a 'compassionate' response to the exception made for Frodo:īilbo and Sam were certainly ring bearers and Bilbo, in particular, had suffered ill effects. Thus Frodo (by the express gift of Arwen) and Bilbo, and eventually Sam (as adumbrated by Frodo) and as a unique exception Gimli the Dwarf, as friend of Legolas and 'servant' of Galadriel. …certain 'mortals', who have played some great part in Elvish affairs, may pass with the Elves to Elvenhome. Involvement in Elvish affairs and closeness to the Elves: For instance, Gimli wasn't a ringbearer, and yet tradition had it that he sailed West.įrodo certainly mentions the fact of Sam having been a ring bearer in 'The Gray Havens', but looking at Tolkien's letters, there seem to be a couple of other factors too.ġ. But I don't think the fact of being a ringbearer is the absolute clincher here. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there!
